I was MC at a wedding Saturday in Olinda, Dandenong Ranges. A gorgeous country-style soiree memorable for its personal setting (the bride and groom’s backyard), food and wine (both dedicated Francophiles) and laid back service – the groom was most anxious to get to “and now you may kiss the bride.”
When hosting an event, one prays the technology will hold out. Fortunately the microphone worked a treat and my housekeeping and introductions were received loud and clear.
It was a testament to the bride the speeches were kept short and snappy (entertaining too). Each speaker had five minutes tops – not one went a minute over.
The day prior my students and I discussed memorable speeches. Screened one of my favourites: Cuba Gooding Jr – Best Supporting Actor Oscar (1997 for Jerry Maguire). Delivered with passion and humour. The music cuts in – he defies the Academy and keeps going, the audience stands and encourages him. Makes me cry every time.
